Does any of your your older applications have trouble running on your new system, with dual or multiple processors? Do you find such older application maximizing the CPU usage at 100 percent?
You can get around these problems by setting processor affinity for such older applications.Configure the older applications that are not multiprocessor (SMP or HT) aware to use only one of the CPUs (processor), by setting processor affinity in windows task manager of your windows vista operating system.
Is your PC or laptop laptop lagging behind in playing HD videos?Even if you have a good processor, graphic card and memory,it will not run HD videos smoothly. You need to have good codecs installed.Codec is what really matters. You need to have a good programmed codec pack.Use Combined Community Codec Pack. Its free.It delivers smooth HD videos. It comes bundled with many players.

Now Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Vista can be used and run for 120 days or 4 months (3 rearms), and extending the activation grace period is not a violation of the Vista End User License Agreement (EULA). All versions of Vista include Windows Vista Ultimate allow a 30-day free period without activation, except the corporate-oriented Vista Enterprise, which supports only a three-day trial.
To extend, reset or restart the initial OOB grace period of Windows Vista to another 30 days, use the following steps:
1. Start command prompt with administrator privileges(run as administrator)
2. In the Command Prompt, type the following command
slmgr -rearm
or you can use sysprep /generalize
3. Reboot the computer.
4. Rearm again when the remaining activation grace period timer counts down to 0 days.
Rearm option resets the computer’s activation timer and reinitializes some activation parameters.
Inside Windows Vista,an administrator account exists just like Windows XP.It is not part of administrator group. But it is a super administrator account, just like root in unix.It is disabled and kept hidden.Microsoft doesnot discloses this for security reasons.Infact Microsoft said Windows Vista doesn`t have any administrator account like Windows XP.
Also you will see that this account is not subjected to User Account Control like other normal administrator account. You will not see any UAC prompts while making changes to the system.
So how enable it.Let me start:-
Run command prompt(run as administrator)
Type the following commands
Net user administrator /active:yes
Now you will an administrator account on your login screen
To disable it,use this command Net user administrator /active:no

Click Start, Run, Type REGEDIT Navigate to the following key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \Explorer \ FileExts
Find the extension you wish to edit and click on the [+] sign to expand OpenWithList (in the right pane, you will see a list with the programs, like “paint.exe”, “notepad.exe”, etc).
Use the File, Export option to back up the key.
Click on the one you wish to delete and press the delete button.
Still some items may show up in the Openwith lists, which comes from the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry key, which is common for all the user profiles. You may
remove the entries from the following key:HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ .xxx \OpenWithList where xxx is a file extension. With that removed, Windows may still show some default open-with lists.Depending upon the file type, the openwith listing is generated from the subkeys under:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \SystemFileAssociations \ <Type>\
Simply put, don’t remove this part as it affects many file types, not aparticular one
Equalizer presets are stored in a file called ‘Winamp.q1’ in the Winamp program folder. Custom equalizer presets when saved get appended to the same file. To migrate the presets, simply copy the file ‘Winamp.q1’ to the Winamp folder on the destination PC and you’re done! The fi le is so small that you can even e-mail it to your friends if you want to share your presets with them.
The “System Restore” feature in Windows XP works perfectly fi ne for most of us. But the over cautious nature of the feature does result in a lot of storage space being occupied by the system restore files. If you would only like to have the latest restore point and not all the restore points that have been created, you can delete all the previous restore points and free some space. Follow the instructions to learn how to clean up the old redundant restore points.
- Open “My Computer” and right click on the drive whose restore points you want to clear.
- Select “Properties” and under the “General” tab, click on “Disk Cleanup”.
- Click on “More Options” tab and select the last option “Cleanup” under the “System Restore” section. You will be asked if you want to delete all but the most recent restore points,
- click on “Yes” to delete all leaving the most recent of system restore points.
To get back the “show desktop” icon do the following:
- Make sure “Quick Launch” is enabled
- Right click on the taskbar and then click on “Properties”, and a box will pop up.
- Under the taskbar tab, check the option that says “Show Quick Launch” and then click on “Apply”.
- After you are done with this, click on “Start” and then click on “Run”. A small box will pop up on the right hand corner. If any text is present, delete it and type the command “regsvr32 /n /i:U shell32” in the open box without the quotes. Wait for a couple of seconds and you will see a small window, which says “DllInstall in shell32 succeeded”.Now, you will be able to see the “Show desktop” icon again.
The most common way of viewing the details of a Word document is by opening the document and then going to “Tools | Word count”, which gives the detailed statistics like the number of pages, word count, number of paragraphs, lines and so on. But did you know that there’s a simpler way out? You can view the statistics without even opening the document and it just requires four clicks!
Just follow these steps:
- Right click on the Word document and select “Properties”.
- In the properties dialog box, select the “Summary” tab.
- Click on the “Advanced” button in the “Summary” tab and there you go! All the statistics are right there!
On adding a new drive to the system after Windows XP is installed, the drive letters of the new partition succeed that of the optical drive. If you’re used to having the optical drive’s letter last in the list under ‘My Computer’, you need to interchange thedrive letters. Here’s how you do it:
- Disable the optical drive before you proceed to interchange the drive letters.
the new hard disk and the optical drive.
- Right click on ‘My Computer’ and select ‘Properties’.
- Under the ‘System properties’ dialog box, click on the ‘Hardware’ tab. Bring up the ‘Device Manager’.
- Expand the heading ‘DVD/CD-ROM’ drives.
- Right click on the listed optical drives and disable them.
- Exit the ‘Device manager’. Now,interchange the drive letters.
- Right click on “My Computer” and select “Manage” from the context menu to bring up “Computer Management”.
- Select “Disk management” under the heading “Storage”. All the existing partitions will get listed in the right pane.
- Right click on the drive letter you wish to change and select the option “Change Drive Letter and Paths”.
- Click on the “Change” button in the next dialog box and choose the new drive
letter from the drop down list. Since you disabled the optical drive, you will now
get the option to assign the drive letter previously assigned to it. - Click on “OK” and exit the “Computer Management” application. Now, enable the optical drives you had disabled.
- Head back to the “DeviceManager” and enable optical drives.
1. Hack/Remove TCP connections Limit
If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This might hurt your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to as much peers as you want. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it could cripple your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download THIS PATCH.The patch allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more is NOT always better).
Next you need to configure your torrent client to allow 50-100 max half-open TCP connections
µTorrent: Options > Preferences > Advanced options > net.max_halfopen
2. Change the default port.
By default, bittorrent uses a port 6881-6999. Bittorrent generates a lot traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range.
{ Let say between 49152 - 49454 }
3. Optimize your internet connection
The TCP optimizer is a freeware utility that optimizes your internet connection. I found it very useful and it helped speeding up my connection for regular internet activity and for downloading torrents. Just download it, and move the slidebar to your maximum download rate (note that it’s in kb/s). Don’t try to set it higher because that will hurt your download speeds!
4. Reduce your upload speed:
Bittorrents are usually programmed to perform efficiently when all users upload to their maximum, but the truth is that this only slows your download. For an efficient download, you should keep your upload speeds about 75-80% of the maximum.
In order to do that you can use one from the many speed test sites available like Speakeasy Speed Test.
5. Unblock Ports in your Router:Torrents commonly use ports ranging from 6881~6889 for high speed downloading. If you know which port to use for the fastest download then find out the manufacturer of your router and the specific model. Then go to Portforward.com and begin choosing the model of your Router.
6) Choose the best torrent(More seeders):
Choose Torrents that have the best seed to peer ratio. For example, a file having 100 seeds and 100 peers is much better than a file with 100 seeds and 200 peers.
Are your computer is installed Vista OS? And are your iPod connected to it? Then your iPod could be in danger.
Do not simply use "Safely Remove Hardware" feature or disconnect the iPod using Windows Explorer.
Why ? That's because Vista OS has a bug that can corrupt your iPod if you're using that function. Microsoft didn't state what kind of problems will that bug bring to your iPod, they just say that, IF you're affected by the bug, you'll have to use iTunes to restore all the music on your iPod.
How To Fix My Vista ?
Microsoft has released the patch for the problem. You can now download the patch here:-
Vista Patch for iPod
If you spend hours listening to music while you’re at the PC, running Winamp will eat up space on the taskbar.Instead you can place Winamp in the system tray and free some space on the
taskbar for other applications. Here’s how you can do this:
After launching Winamp, press “CTRL+P” to bring up the “Preferences” dialog box.
Click on “General Preferences” in the left pane.
Under the “Show Winamp in:” section, uncheck “Taskbar” and check “System tray”.
Now close the dialog boxes for the changes to take effect.
Whenever I try to access my desktop from my notebook I get a dialog box asking for password. It always tries to access the “IPC$” and entering any password does not work. How do I access my Windows XP notebook from my desktop, which has Windows 98 installed on it?
To access your Windows XP notebook from your desktop with Windows 98 installed, follow the steps mentioned below:
Make a note of the username and password you use to log in to your Windows 98 machine. This refers to the initial login screen you get when Windows boots to the desktop. If you
don’t have one then create one—don’t use a blank password. On the Windows XP machine, create a user account similar to the one you use to log in to the Windows 98 machine.
Click on “Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools |
Computer Management” on the Windows XP machine.
Under “Computer Management (Local), go to “System Tools | Local Users and Groups | Users”.
Click on the “Action” menu and select “New User”.
Create a new user just as the one you use on the Windows 98 machine. The password also has to be the same. Uncheck “User must change password at next logon”.
Now check “Password never expires”.
Click on “Create” and then on “Close”.
Disable “Simple File Sharing” on
Windows XP. Open Windows Explorer and click on “Tools | Folder Options”.
Click on the “View” tab and uncheck
“Use Simple File Sharing”.
Click on “Apply” and then on “OK”. Now try to access your Windows XP shared
from the Windows 98 machine. If this also does not work, check to see if Windows XP’s fi rewall is on and restricting access to the machine. Disable it.
You have in all probability assigned manually entered static IP addresses to the desktop and notebook. On the XP notebook, click on Start | Settings | Network Connections.
Right click on your network connection and select “Properties”.
Click on “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and select “Properties”.
Click on the “Advanced” button and then select the “WINS” tab.
Select “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”under “NetBIOS setting”.
Learn how to change *.exe files, in 5 easy steps:
1) Don't try to modify a program by editing his source in a disassembler. Why? Because that's for programmers and assembly experts only.If you try to view it in hex you'll only get tons of crap that you won`t understand.First off, you need Resource Hacker(last version). It's a resource editor- very easy to use.
2) Unzip the archive, and run ResHacker.exe.
3) You will see that the interface is simple and clean. Go to the menu FileOpen or press Ctrl+O to open a file. Browse your way to the file you would like to edit. You can edit *.exe, *.dll, *.ocx, *.scr and *.cpl files, but this tutorial is to teach you how to edit *.exe files, so open one.
4) In the left side of the screen a list of sections will appear.
The most common sections are
-String table;
-RCData;
-Dialog;
-Cursor group;
-Bitmap;
-WAV.
*Icon: You can wiew and change the icon(s) of the program by double-clicking the icon section, chossing the icon, right-clicking on it an pressing "replace resource". After that you can choose the icon you want to replace the original with.
*String table: a bunch of crap, useful sometimes, basic programming knowladge needed.
*RCData: Here the real hacking begins. Modify window titles, buttons, text, and lots more!
*Dialog:Here you can modify the messages or dialogs that appear in a program. Don't forget to press "Compile" when you're done!
*Cursor group: Change the mouse cursors used in the program just like you would change the icon.
*Bitmap: View or change images in the programs easy!
*WAV:Change the sounds in the program. with your own.
5) In the RCData, Dialog, Menu and String table sections you can do a lot of changes. You can modify or translate the text change links, change buttons, etc.
TIP:
- To change a window title, search for something like: CAPTION "edit this". TIP: After all operations press the "Compile Script" button, and when you're done editing save, your work @ FileSave(Save as).
- When you save a file, the original file will be backed up by default and renamed to Name_original and the saved file will have the normal name of the changed program.
- Sometimes you may get a message like: "This program has a non-standard resource layout... it has probably been compressed with an .EXE compressor." That means that Resource Hacker can't modify it because of it's structure.
Step 1 - Modify Explorer.exe File
In order to make the changes, the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows needs to be edited. Since explorer.exe is a binary file it requires a special editor. For purposes of this article I have used Resource Hacker. Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems. If you want this paste "Resource Hacker" in the search box and thats it.
The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe.
The category we are going to be using is "String Table". Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.
There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry. In my case I used Click Me!
You’ll notice that after the new text string has been entered the Compile Script button that was grayed out is now active. I won’t get into what’s involved in compiling a script, but suffice it to say it’s going to make this exercise worthwhile. Click Compile Script and then save the altered file using the Save As command on the File Menu. Do not use the Save command – Make sure to use the Save As command and choose a name for the file. Save the newly named file to C:\Windows.
Step 2 – Modify the Registry
!!!make a backup of your registry before making changes!!!
Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open field. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon
In the right pane, double click the "Shell" entry to open the Edit String dialog box. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.
Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.[/b]
If any of you out there like to use the thumbnail view, especially for browsing through photos and images, it can become a bit of a drain on your system. It is possible to lower the thumbnail size and quality by editing the following registry keys.
Open the registry and navigate to :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft \ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer
Create a new DWORD value called ThumbnailSize, and set the value between 32 and 256.
And/or create another DWORD value called ThumbnailQuality, and set the value between 50 and 100.
Key Details :
USER Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft \ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer]
Value Name: ThumbnailSize
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Data Value: 32 - 256
USER Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft \ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer]
Value Name: ThumbnailQuality
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Data Value: 50 - 100
